I recently had the opportunity to go on a hunting trip in Hungary organized by Passion & Prey. I had never been to Europe prior to this, thus I depended on my contact person to attend to all the details such as booking flights and accommodations. As well as selecting a hunting location.
I hunted the forestry area of Guth. This hunting association is an all included hunting lodge, located in rural Hungary approximately 2 hours from the airport in Budapest. When I arrived at the lodge my every need was taken care of. The facility was outstanding and considering I was there in January which is considered late management season, I was amazed how there was always staff present to assist me if I needed anything. The rooms, food and grounds have to be experienced to be appreciated.
The hunting is made up of 13,000 hectares and the amount of quality Fallow deer I saw, can only be described as impressive and although I did not hunt them, I also saw a number of quality wild boar and Red Stags.
My hunt included sitting in high stands, hunting with 4X4 trucks, as well as my favorite, hunting with a horse and buggy. This method involved a driver taking my guide and I to prime areas, which we then slow stalked through looking for Fallow deer. The driver usually picked us up in a pre-determined location and we moved to the next area. I strongly advise anyone planning a trip to this area to make sure to request at least one day hunting with this method, because after spending a day riding in a horse drawn carriage though the woods of Hungary, the ideal day hunting for me has changed.
As a north American hunter, I would consider the cost of the accommodations and guide services to be quite cheap. The largest portion of expenses is the trophy fee. You pay for the weight of the skull and antlers you harvest. Having said that the guides are skilled in identifying the size of trophy you wish to shoot. The over all trip is probably more affordable than most in North America would be. The guides, staff, food, and lodge are second to none and I can’t wait to go back.
As a bonus to my hunting trip, my trip organizer, Albert arranged a hotel and short tour of Budapest at the end of my trip. The architecture of this city was the cherry of top of a perfect trip.
