Historical Themes

Newfoundland and Labrador’s uniquely rich history is certainly worth to explore. It is archaeologically proven that Vikings arrived here more than 1,000 years ago. Historical sites on the Northern Peninsula represent the lifestyle they had lived, listed by UNESCO World Heritage program and now it is a hot touristic spot open to all.

Then the Irish arrived in the 15th century and colonized the island. They established North-America’s oldest city, St John’s. They have since developed the land and set a solid population and cultural footprint in Newfoundland. Many of the historical sites in St John’s tell stories about the last 500 years battles and graces.

BEFORE the arrival of the settlers, Indigenous tribes lived their sustainable lives in harmony with Mother Nature. The spectacular annual powwow brings Native and non-Native People together to join in dancing, singing, visiting, and renewing old friendships and making new ones. This celebration is for renewing thoughts of the old ways and to preserve a rich heritage.

Newfoundland and Labrador is a widely recognized and popular choice for exotic cuisine. Seafood- and wild game-based food provide a culturally specific taste of some smaller coastline villages, scattered throughout our province. In recent years, there has been an outburst of demand for the unique taste of Newfoundland and Labrador.
